The Blackpool Block Party takes place on Sunday 23rd August on Great William O'Brien Street, in Blackpool, Cork, and is a celebration of community and everything local. On stage we have Two Time Polka, Arundó, The Heppsters Jazz Trio, French folk indie singer, Delta Plane, and the Spangle Hill Band, as well as a diverse programme of events throughout the afternoon.
There will be flash fiction workshops with Graffiti Theatre, an art installation called ‘Hope Has Wings’ produced by Cork City Partnership, acrobatics workshop by Streetacro extraordinaire Ally Futto, DIY bike repair workshops with Cork Community Bikes, DIY clothes repair workshops and sustainable fashion related events with Cork Environmental Forum and Restyle Ireland, gardening displays from Meitheal Follaine and NICHE Community Gardens, smoothie bikes for a healthy shake, a repair café where you can learn to fix your broken stuff, knitting classes run by the Blackpool Knitting Group, a Creative Garden display by Corlann Blackpool, a céilí on the street, street games, craft stalls, clothes swaps, and plenty of books and bric a brac to be given away.
And that's not all, we'll be serving a free lunch (yes, there is such a thing) cooked by the wonderful Tiger Balm Supper Club, with all the ingredients coming from the many fantastic community gardens across Cork City. Expect delicious salads, freshly baked breads, homemade pickles and sauces followed by an afternoon tea party under our large marquee, baked by the residents of Blackpool for the whole community to enjoy.
Best of all, the wonderful gardeners from the Health Action Zone and the Blackpool Men’s Shed, will be giving away the best seasonal produce from our local community gardens, as well as free planters, pots, compost and seeds, so you can grow your own at home.
The Blackpool Block Party is produced by Cork Community Art Link and kindly supported by SICAP, Cork City Council, Slaintecare, Safefood, Health Action Zone, HSE, Blackpool Community Centre, Cork Environmental Forum, Blackpool Credit Union, Cork Volunteer Centre and local businesses. The event is also part of the Cork City Council Open Streets programme. The Open Street concept involves opening up of roadways as spaces for social and community events. This encourages a culture where streets are seen as shared spaces for health and well-being and recreation, rather than just for vehicles.
